Planning a full-moon night on the white Rann

When to go, what to bring and how to time your evening so you see the salt turn silver.

On a full-moon night the white Rann looks like snow under a clear sky. The salt reflects the moonlight so well that you can walk out onto the flats without a torch. These are the nights guests remember, and the ones that fill up first.

When to go

The salt is at its whitest from November to February, after the monsoon water has dried. Plan your stay around the full moon, and arrive a day early so a cloudy evening does not cost you the whole trip.

What to bring

  • A warm layer: desert nights in winter drop close to 10°C.
  • Your visitor permit, or the details we need to help you get one.
  • A camera with a tripod, if you want the moonlit salt sharp.
  • Comfortable shoes for walking on the crust.

How to time the evening

Leave Khavda about an hour before sunset. Watch the sun go down over the salt, stay through the blue hour, and wait for the moon to clear the horizon. Ask us at the front desk and we will tell you the moonrise time for your dates.
